Type : Live Plant

Size  : 25Cm - 30Cm

The Monodora myristica (commonly known as the African Nutmeg or Calabash Nutmeg) is a medium to large-sized tree. Its foliage consists of simple, alternate leaves that are oblong to elliptical, reaching lengths of up to 45 cm and widths of up to 20 cm. The upper surface of the leaf is dark green, while the underside is a paler shade. New leaves are purplish in color, adding to the tree’s aesthetic appeal.

The aromatic flowers of Monodora myristica are pendant and have long pedicels, measuring up to 20 cm. The outer three petals are yellow, adorned with red spots and wavy edges, while the inner three petals form a cone at the center of the flower, colored pale yellow with purplish-red spots, contributing to the striking visual appearance of the bloom.

The fruit is a large, woody berry, globose in shape, and typically measures about 20 cm in diameter. Inside, numerous seeds are embedded in creamy-white pulp, which has a sweet, fragrant aroma. The plant’s name, Monodora, means "only one gift" in Greek, referring to the solitary nature of the fruit. The genus name myristica is derived from the nutmeg genus, likely alluding to the similarity in scent and flavor between the seeds of Monodora myristica and true nutmeg.

In ethnobotanical uses, the seeds and fruits of Monodora myristica are valued for their culinary and medicinal properties. The seeds, which have a scent similar to nutmeg, are often used in African cuisine as a flavoring agent. The fruit and seeds are edible and widely consumed in various regions. Medicinally, the seeds and bark are used in traditional treatments for conditions such as headaches, digestive issues, and eye diseases.

The wood of Monodora myristica is also useful and is suitable for carpentry work, thanks to its durability. Additionally, the seeds are used in crafting aromatic necklaces, adding another cultural dimension to the plant’s many uses.
